Puerto Rico Alternative Spring Break 2020

Florida Institute of Technology student, Julia Martinus recounts her alternative spring break experience in Puerto Rico. Enjoy!

"Twelve students from Florida Institute of Technology traveled to Puerto Rico to do community service during spring break. They worked with a family on their farm. They learned how Hurricane Maria and other natural disasters impacted the family's farm and other parts of the island. They experienced Puerto Rican culture through conversations and fun. It was a trip of a lifetime!

It was an incredible trip. We learned so much from our local guide, Pay, who quickly became a father figure for all of us. We experienced Puerto Rico in a way not many get to experience it. From sitting on our balcony overlooking a river, to helping a family with the farm and home they built themselves. When rain canceled our plans, we went off looking for adventure. The adventure ended up being a 3-hour car ride trying to find a suspension bridge, but hey, life is about the journey, not the destination!

I am beyond proud of the work we accomplished on this trip and the memories we made. This group was amazing to work with and they have great souls. Thank you guys for making my spring break amazing!

Big thank you to Florida Institute of Technology, Beyond the Map, Pay, Rebecca, John, Cameron, and everyone in Puerto Rico who treated us with the utmost respect and made our experience everything that it was. Muchas gracias. Please enjoy this video I made about our trip."
