Day 1. Welcome to the Yucatan!
Our trip begins from Cancun International Airport. Our guides will be waiting for you at the airport. The adventure will begin immediately as we travel inland towards the traditional village of Vallodolid. Along the way, we will head off the beaten path to explore hidden Mayan ruins. You can choose to relax or explore the town before our first group dinner and orientation for the week ahead!
Day 2: Mayan Ruins & Cenotes
Today we will enjoy the sunrise over the infamous Chichen Itza, the largest Mayan ruin in the Yucatan Peninsula. After a morning of exploration, we will hike to a hidden cenote to cool off, cliff jump and snorkel. We will finish the day with a homemade dinner and the sounds of the local “tunkul.” The iconic sound stems from one of the most emblematic musical instruments of Yucatecan music and is a part of the Maya culture, that we still listen to today.
Day 3: Coastal Ruins
Get a complete understanding of the Mayan culture by visiting the final set of ruins for this trip. Climb the towering pyramids of the Coba ruin to get a sweeping view of the jungle. Keep an eye out for local wildlife! Finish the ruin experience at Tulum, a Mayan ruin that sits along the cliffs overlooking the turquoise ocean water. Tonight we will stay in a cozy beach town where we will fall asleep to the sound of the waves.
Day 4: The Mayan Underworld
Set out for a grand adventure today as you embark on a SCUBA or snorkel trip through the underground cave systems, locally known as cenotes. A 4x4 vehicle will transport us through the rutted, jungle road to our hidden oasis. Here we will grab our gear and dip into the translucent waters that dissapear beneath the earth. As you journey through this underground tunnel, your eyes will feast on the array of colors and the reflection of the light penetrating through the cavern openings overhead. Cenotes were a vital part of the Mayan civilization and culture. The Mayans believed that the cenotes were passageways to the underworld and their gods. It was into these watery aybsses that valuable treasures and human sacrifices were offered to the gods in exchange for rain. In certain cenotes, these artificats can still be seen! After an adventurous afternoon, you have the option to relax on the beach or snorkel with a local population of sea turtles.
Day 5: Swimming with Giants
There's few experiences that will truly compare to the adventure that you are about to take part of today! Hop aboard a boat and set sail towards the open ocean in search of whale sharks! Contrary to its name, the whale shark is not a whale; it is, rather, the world’s largest fish, growing as long as 60 feet. Grab your snorkel gear and camera and dip into the water alongside these majestic creatures. There's nothing to fear as the whale shark is truly a gentle giant and has no interest in feasting upon humans. As it swims, it sucks water through its gargantuan mouth, as wide as 5 feet, then filters out plankton and other microscopic organisms through its gills. Our last night will finish with a group dinner where we will reminisce about our favorite parts of the trip!

Why Travel With Us
I would recommend BTM for any trip you and your friends want to go on, or to any organization interested in planning a trip... especially if you are interested in "getting out there" and not just stopping at the common tourist spots everyone goes to.
This was hands-down one of the the most exciting, rewarding, and memorable trips I've ever been on! The peace of mind to know that I didn't have to worry about anything was worth every penny. All I had to do was show up. Cody and Lystina took it from there. No stress, no anxiety, no rushing around or wasting time trying to find an activity or a place to eat. I got to sit back, relax, and experience a whole new world that was far beyond my map.
Since I've been back I have recommended these trips to so many people because this company creates these remarkable journeys that allow people to experience the world in a unique way. I can't wait to go on my next expedition with Beyond the Map!
