Day 1: Welcome to Iceland!
Hallo friends! The fresh Icelandic air will greet you as you exit the airport and meet your personal Beyond the Map trip directors. Most flights from the US to Iceland are overnight and arrive very early. Not to worry! Our first stop will be to a local bakery and coffee shop. Today we jump right in as we head north to summit the iconic Kirkjufell mountain. There will be free time to become oriented with the small fishing town before our first group dinner. Finish the evening with an entertaining ice-breaker game and an orientation to the adventures ahead!Get some rest because to tomorrow we depart for one the most remote sections of the country.
Day 2: Westfjord Wonderland
This morning we catch an early ferry to the often overlooked Westfjords region of Iceland. This is a section of the country where mass tourism ends and dramatic landscapes abound! Follow the rutted gravel roads as they twist and turn along breathtaking coastal fjords and over towering mountains. Along the way, pass through tiny fishing villages that still embrace the traditional ways of life. We continue our journey towards the dizzying cliffs of Latraburg and head out on warm up hikes to towering waterfalls. Get some rest, tomorrow we begin our backpacking journey in the morning!
Day 3: The Edge of the World
Embark on an adventure of a lifetime today! With bags in tow, we will board a ferry that will transport us to Hornistrandur Nature Preserve. Hornistrandur is a tucked away stretch of remote wilderness in the northwest claw of the Westfjords. A wild gem of green slopes, snow-capped glacier peninsulas, and slate-blue bays, Hornstrandir's hard to reach location and rugged landscape is the exact reason this section of the country has been a hidden oasis, void of the tour buses and crowds. Today will be an easier, low mileage day to get comfortable with our surroundings and gear.
Day 4: Hiking the Arctic Circle
After a hearty breakfast we head out to continue the hike through the Arctic Circle. Scramble up sheer cliff faces and along narrow ridgelines. Tonight camp beneath the stars knowing you are probably the furtherst away from people in your entire life.
Day 5: Raw Beauty
Today we head up a steep slope to the mountain ridge Skalakambur and follow a route marked with cairns towards the steep Atlaskard (327m) mountain pass. We will go around Mt Kollur and from there start making our way towards Hofn in Hornvík, the heart of Hornstrandir nature reserve. This is a place of dramatic natural beauty and should not be missed out by anyone travelling in this area.
Day 6: Full Circle
The beauty of Hornvik is unmatched, surrounding it are two of Iceland’s largest bird cliffs. Like the entire Hornstrandir area, Hornvik is very remote and is only accessible by boat or by foot. We hike to Hornbjarg cliff where thousands of birds can be seen and the massive sculptures of mother nature make human beings feel very small and vulnerable. Many visitors state that the hike to Hornbjarg was the highlight of their Hornstrandir trip.
Day 7: Back to Civilization
Finish the trail early in the day to catch a boat back to Islafjordur. Continue your travels back down to Reykjavik. Surely, even this relatively quiet city will seem busy in comparison to the trail. Take the evening to stroll the streets and grab dinner.
